Comprehensive cloud migration preparedness audit for an insurance company
What was the project about?
Our client wanted to reduce risks related to local equipment failure and ensure high availability for their insurance portfolio; to this end, they started thinking of migrating their entire infrastructure to the public cloud. Their secondary objective was to simplify their environment and reduce its maintenance costs. They hired Altkom Software to perform a comprehensive cloud exit analysis, including four providers: Microsoft Azure; Amazon Web Services; Oracle Cloud Infrastructure; Google Cloud.
At this stage, it was already clear to us that the analysis would need to include the following elements: different migration strategies, along with a cost breakdown, measures that would need to be taken before cloud exit and total migration costs for each of the four providers. We would also need to show how to lower the total costs of migration and cloud resource management.
Based on our analysis, the client would then decide whether they wanted to migrate their infrastructure at all, and if so, which cloud provider they preferred.

Who have we helped?
Our client was the Polish branch of a large international insurance company. At the outset, the company had around one hundred physical servers in place. We started by collecting complete data about their resources and infrastructure specifications (e.g. licence costs, different environments and their operation, backups, server SLAs, etc.).
What were the key challenges of the project?
- Performing a full migration analysis for different public cloud providers;
- Creating an interdisciplinary team of experts specialised in working with each of the four cloud providers;
- Impartiality (not favouring one provider)
How did we address the challenge?
We performed our analysis and drew up a report to help the client identify possible cloud exit directions. The document included migration strategies and costs, as well as those elements of the client’s environment that would require changes in the architecture.
- We checked and assessed the servers indicated by the client as marked for migration in terms of migration preparedness;
- We identified and listed potential migration risks, as well as factors that would impact the process;
- We checked whether the client’s systems could be migrated and recommended the most profitable model (e.g. Lift and Shift or Refactor);
- We presented a cost estimate for each of the four providers;
- We defined the necessary composition and skills of the team that would maintain the cloud environment;
- We listed recommendations for each provider, including hybrid solutions and a possible cloud PoC.

How did we work on the project?
Information
Obtaining the full list of servers along with their specifications.
Verification
Verifying possible migration paths.
Analysis
Full analysis and cost estimates.
Reporting
Preparing and presenting the report.
What did we achieve?
The client knows the best available migration paths and can estimate the time and money needed for successful cloud migration.
The client received a complete analysis of migration to the cloud (both from a technological and business perspective).
The client can solve tech problems and issues before the migration begins.
IT ManagerThe work we have already done for our client is sure to pay off in the future. A comparison of migration paths based only on calculators available from providers would not include many elements analysed in our report, e.g. information on whether specific systems will be supported by the client’s cloud of choice.
The client can now take an informed decision, based on a variety of advantages rather than just the financial aspects.
